Project South’s organizing, movement building work, and political education is focused on and based in the South, but our work has always impacted national movement building efforts. From producing and distributing critical popular education materials and toolkits for over 20 years to anchoring the first U.S. Social Forum in Atlanta, Project South has built strong working relationships with forces in all parts of the United States.

The assembly is an organism of social movement organizations and people. It is not a network, not a coalition, not an alliance, and not a political party. It is a new formation. It is INCLUSIVE and not exclusive to one political line or ideology. It is a CONVERGENCE of forces and social movement organizations and people.

The US Social Forum (USSF) is a movement building process. It is not a
conference but it is a space to come up with the peoples’ solutions to the
economic and ecological crisis.
The U.S. Social Forum emerged from the World Social Forum, a convergence of social movement forces that came together in Brazil in 2001. Grassroots, people of color-led organizations in the United States initiated the U.S. Social Forum in 2004 to begin organizing a mass convergence of grassroots movements. Project South was selected as the anchor organization and organized a Local Organizing Committee and a Regional Organizing Committee to launch the first U.S. Social Forum in 2007 in Atlanta.

There is a need for a sustained and coordinated movement that can meet the collective challenge of organizing against state violence in Black communities. Black folks are coming together to create a powerful coalition against systemic racism in one of the most dynamic and organic movements that this country has seen in decades.
That’s why we’re excited to announce a space where we can build on our successes, sharpen our skills and chart a path for the road ahead.
